Sylamore WMA

The Sylamore District of the Ozark National Forest, and the Leatherwood Wilderness Area offer some very exciting hunting. Black bear, wild hog, turkey, and whitetail deer are the primary game animals.

However, a key point to keep in mind is that the word "hunting" finds it's true meaning here. This is very rugged, brush-thick country. Dogs are not allowed for hunting expect for coons. Finding game takes a lot of time and work - and luck.

Large black bear in the 350 to 450 pound range, wild boar in the 200 to 400 pound range, and buck in the 150 to 180 pound range are not unusual. Whitetail do not get as large here as the corn-fed deer in Texas or up north.

The area is in two hunting zones, each may have specific regulations. Season dates vary a little each year.

Primary hunting seasons are from October 1 through February for archery, muzzle loading, and modern rifle. Each has it's own date and regulations.
