This list focuses on unique Mom & Pop shops, not on all the stores you already have at home. Yes, the area has the usual Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Lowes, Home Depot, auto parts stores, etc. But we're guessing you'd like something unique, something different so that is what is on this list.

In addition to the ten shops and stores listed here, there are at least another 15 that we have not listed.

As with restaurants, small Mom & Pop stores have a tendency to come and go, and to change hours. We try to keep up with them all, but your best bet is to phone before you go if you don't want to take your chances on their being open when you drive by on the tour. As with our restaurant list, we use an asterisk here to note the shops that have been in business for quite sometime.

The unique stores and shops are all on the Highway 5 leg of our tour, or on Main Street in Mountain View.

Point 4 -

Woodsman's Sports Shop* - 870-499-7454 - This is another independent operation long a favorite with fishermen, hunters, and tourists. Sharps - 870-499-3545 - A very diverse outdoor recreation supply store. Large selection of knives, firearms, ammo, fishing tackle, air rifles, scopes, camping equipment, Zippo lighters, and a long list of other possible. No junk here! 13851 Hwy 5 South, Norfork Arkansas. Open Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 2pm to 6:30pm, Thursdays & Fridays 5pm to 6:30pm, Saturdays from 10am to 6:30pm.

For Mother Earth* - 870-499-5514 - Whether you grew up in the 1960's or not, this store is a lot of fun. Hippie & ethnic stuff, beads, crystals, drums, gems, local honey, jewelry, hemp clothing, hemp food and body care items, and used books. This store is packed with inventory. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30am to 5pm, Sunday 1p to 5p. Just down the street across the road from For Mother Earth.

Point 8 - Ozark Mountain Gallery & Brookfalls Restaurant - 870-297-2038 - Men plan on more than one cup of coffee here! The woman in your life will love this place! The Ozark Mountain Gallery is a great collection of quality home decor, art, fine art prints, and similar. The Brookfalls Restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunches from 11am until 2pm, and open for dinner Friday and Saturday at 6pm for a fabulous prime rib specialty. Most of the dishes, desserts, and salad dressings are homemade on site. You'll enjoy the large picture window looking out over a beautiful Ozark meadow as you dine. If you are looking for a wedding spot, talk to them! There is a large parking lot. RVs will fit just fine.

Point 10 - Calico Rock - there are a couple of antique and collectable stores on Hwy 56, but catching them when they are open can be a challenge. The Calico Rock Historical District (Main Street) is a short block of stores and offices. Knowles True Value Hardware Store, which is a large honest-to-God country hardware store with endless inventory, has been around for many years. Facing the bridge over the White River on Main Street, the local artist guild shop is on your right. There is also an ice cream shop, the Chamber of Commerce, and a little museum with quite a collection. Main Street is an easy walk, and walking it is the best way to see what it has.

Point 19 - Anglers* - 870-585-2226 - A riverfront restaurant with good food at good prices, a combination convenience store and gift shop with lots of fishing bait and tackle, lodging, gasoline, and a trout dock where you can rent a river boat or hire a fishing guide. At the intersection of Hwys 5, 9, 14 in Allison, Arkansas.

Point 20 - Ozark Folk Center Homespun Gift Shop* - 870-269-3137 - Books, handmade crafts, jams, jellies, locally made baskets, pottery, dulcimers, folk and gospel music CDs, and a long list of unique Ozark items. You'll see some top-notch pottery here. Street address is 1032 Park Avenue, Mountain View, Arkansas.

Point 21 - Mountain View Square - While you'll find all sorts of specialty stores in Mountain View, the top quality art and craft shops are mostly around, or near, the Square. It also pays to drive up and down Main Street and Sylamore Avenue. Aunt Minnie's Mall is at 507 Sylamore Avenue and worth a stop. There are enough artists in the Mountain View area to support an Artist's Guild with it's own store. While you can find a very wide range of arts and crafts here, Mountain View is known for it's fine handmade pottery. At any given time there will be some 20 shops selling unique art, crafts, and other handmade items.

Point 24 - Blanchard Springs Caverns Gift Shop* - 870-757-2211 - This is where you can get the really good books for identifying local wildflowers, trees, and wildlife. (Our personal favorites are Carl Hunter books.) For children are several natural world educational items and plush stuffed toy animals. In all the store has about 2,000 items. Open 7 days a week during the summer, and Wednesday – Sunday during the winter (November 1 to March 31). Hours are 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. The address is Forest Road 1110A, Fifty Six, Arkansas.
